The Kingdom

The Kingdom

The Kingdom, by Peter Berg

Having seen The Kingdom, we are faced with the complexities of multiple heroes. Fleury is obviously the main character, but we also have Leavitt, Mayes, Sykes, Faris and Haytham to deal with. Each of these characters experiences change. How a character changes fundamentally from beginning of the movie to the end is called a character arc.

This is the last opportunity you have for an in-class analysis of the Hero’s Journey. With that in mind, for this assignment you will:

  1. Do a complete analysis of The Kingdom based on the Hero’s Journey. All elements should be present: Ordinary world, special world, plot point 1 and 2, heroes, allies, thresholds, threshold guardians, inmost cave, Shadow (or Nemesis), final confrontation and return of the hero.
  2. Do complete character arcs for each of the heroes, with supporting evidence from the movie.

On their waytothe airport, they are attacked by terrorists and they lose Leavit, they folloh him and enter a firefight with terrorists. They want to reach to leavit before they execute them. They rescue Leavitt. But, on their way back Fleury sees a little girl and gives her a lolipop, and she gives him a marbale matching those found on the bombing site. Then he realizes that the old man is missing couple of his fingers. He realizes that he is the master mind. Then the man’s old son shoots Al Ghazi, and they take out the boy. And al ghazi dies. And they shoot the old man too. And theyreturn to U.S when Leavitt asks Fleury, what did you tell Mayes that calmed her down, he said ” we are gonna kill them all”. Thats what the old man told his son. The movie shows a never ending cycle.

The set is about a team of special agents of the united states that are hired to fight against terrorism after a city is surrounded of bombs from the enemy. The opening scene of the movie explains the origins of U.S.-Saudi diplomatic relations and how energy exploitation has transformed the Middle East through a timeline sequence. It portrays the conflicts that have risen since the late 1940s for the rightful ownership of the oil industry. This includes the Persian Gulf War in Iraq and al-Qaeda’s growing network of terrorism. Eventually, it explains the 9/11 terrorist attacks and how the majority of the hijackers were Saudis. This raises serious questions on the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States. The plot begins with the current struggle of Saudi Arabia and the kingdom’s efforts to stand control of their country against terrorist extremists.
During a softball game at an American oil company housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, al-Qaeda terrorists set off a bomb, killing many Americans and Saudis in the process. The terrorists impersonate members of the Saudi State Police. While one team hijacks a car and shoots at the residents of the area, another runs out onto the softball diamond, pretending to aid the Americans, but then reveals that he is a suicide bomber and blows himself up, killing everyone near him. Sergeant Haytham of the Saudi state police disables the stolen Saudi Police vehicle and kills the terrorists. A short time later, the FBI Legal Attaché in Saudi Arabia, Special Agent Francis Manner, calls up his colleague Special Agent Ronald Fleury to tell him about the attack. Shortly afterwards, a second bomb explodes in the compound killing Manner and more people.
After having killed their attackers, al-Ghazi decides that three of them must enter and find Leavitt and two must stay behind and cover the entrance. While Sykes and Haytham watch the entrance, al-Ghazi, Fleury and Mayes enter the building, following a blood trail and manage to finish off many other gunmen inside. Mayes, separate from the other two, scares a little girl in an apartment, and she enters to find a family with little children, their mother and grandfather. She yells at them to stay put and goes across the hall to another apartment to find Leavitt and his attackers. She kills the remaining insurgents, and al-Ghazi and the team start to leave. However, Mayes feels unsettled about the little girl, and walks in to give the girl a lollipop. In return, the girl gives her a marble, matching the ones pieced together earlier from the bomb scene. Fleury then realizes that there is a trail of blood leading to the back of the apartment, and al-Ghazi sees the grandfather, suspects something and asks to help him up in order to inspect his hand. When the old man gives him his hand, al-Ghazi sees that the man is missing the fingers that are missing in the terrorist group’s many videos and confirms his idea that the grandfather is the terrorist leader. Abu Hamza’s teenage grandson walks out of the bedroom and manages to shoot al-Ghazi in the neck twice with a pistol before it jams, and then he begins to point his gun at Mayes, prompting Fleury to kill him. Abu Hamza then feebly pulls out an assault rifle and Haytham puts three shots in his chest. As Abu Hamza dies, another grandson hugs him and Abu Hamza whispers something into his ear to calm the child down. Al-Ghazi dies in Fleury’s arms.
Then after all the fight they finally managed to kill the person they were after the bombs were released in the city. Fleury and the members left of his team go back home to start again a life full of expectative and therefore continue their jobs with the U.S. government.

The movie The Kingdoms all starts After a terrorist attack to an American housing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where families and the spy Francis Manner are murdered, FBI agent Ronald Fleury blackmails the South Arabian consul to get five days of investigation in the location. He travels with agent Grant Sykes, Janet Mayes and Adam Leavitt to revenge their friend and try to find the responsible for the bombing. The agents find all sorts of difficulties in their investigation, but they are supported by Colonel Faris Al Ghazi that advises the team how to act in a hostile environment.
FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury quickly assembles an elite team and negotiates a secret five-day trip into Saudi Arabia to locate the madman behind the bombing. Fleury’s crew finds a like-minded partner in Saudi Colonel Al-Ghazi, who helps them navigate royal politics and unlock the secrets of the crime scene. With these unlikely allies sharing a propulsive commitment to crack the case, the team is led to the killer’s front door in a do-or-die confrontation. Now in a fight for their own lives, strangers united by one mission won’t stop until justice is found in The Kingdom. Fortunately for Fleury and his fellow agents, the high-ranking police official assigned to be their watchdog is extremely proficient at his job. Colonel Al-Ghazi and Agent Fleury have a lot more in common than either would have assumed, and the friendship they forge allows the agents to access sections of the bomb site and areas of the city that would otherwise have been off-limits. It’s highly dangerous for all involved, but neither the FBI agents nor their Saudi counterparts are willing to settle for anything less than the capture of those responsible.
Heroes are the five agents sent to solve the problem and find the madman behind the bombing, which they went through very difficult process and their final confrontation was basically taking down the army protecting the alcadha terrorist.

The ordinary world of Ronald Fleury is in the FBI headquarters at Washington DC where he is a special agent. The special world comes after he receives the call to adventure; during a softball game at an American oil company housing compound in Saudi Arabia, terrorists detonate a bomb, killing Americans as well as Saudi Arabians. These terrorists were impersonating Saudi Police with their uniform and vehicle. Even as the terrorists are hijacking a car and shooting everyone around, another one runs to the middle of the chaos and pretends to help Americans, but suddenly he blows himself up as a suicide bomber, killing everyone around. Later, and FBI agent, Francis Manner, calls Fleury to inform him about the attack, and right there, a second bomb sets off killing more people, including Francis. The call to adventure comes in that moment. Fleury starts to brief everyone at the FBI Headquarters including his deployment team, Janet Mayes, Adam Leavitt and Grant Sykes to take off to Saudi Arabia and investigate the attack. The threshold involves Fleury not being allowed to take off to Saudi Arabia. He passes this through blackmailing the Saudi ambassador into allowing an FBI investigative team; and so they depart and arrive at Prince Sultan Air Base and met by Colonel Faris Al Ghazi. Fleury’s allies are Mayes, Leavitt, and Sykes. Another threshold is when Fleury and his team need to gather evidence and they are not permitted. Later on, by having dinner with the Prince Ahmed Bin Khaled they are luckily able to continue the investigation because Faris is the new leader in the investigation. This makes the threshold guardians involve General Al Abdulmalik of the Saudi National Guard, who does not give Fleury and his team permission to investigate. Rather, they are to observe the Saudi investigation, and this is where the Prince comes in. The inmost cave is the dangerous Suweidi neighborhood of Riyadh. This is where grenades were being exchanged between Fleury and his crew and the terrorists. The shadow, or nemesis, is Abu Hamza; he is surrounded by his family and his teenage grandson which exchange secrets with him at the end. The final confrontation is between Abu Hamza and Fleury, and Mayes. The return of the hero is when Fleury returns to Wahshigton DC.

The hero of this movie involves multiple people and their fight and team effort to accomplish a task. To do so they must take on a journey that promises to be the most challenging and dangerous journey of their lives. The movie begins by showing us the ordinary world and lives of our main characters. This shows us that their comfort zone involves FBI work in the United States involved with international relations of sorts. When a terrorist attack on an American compound in Saudi Arabia caused the death of a good friend of most of the agents involved in the plot, our main characters felt they needed to film the culprits. This led them to leave their comfort zone in their ordinary world and enter the special world which is Saudi Arabia; a foreign, dangerous and exotic land in which they have no law or idea of the way things are handled and/or dealt with.
I consider plot point 1 in the movie the section where our heroes are in Saudi Arabia and they are trying to begging their investigation on the terrorist attack. The problem that arises or the threshold needed to be passed is that the Arabian government (threshold guardian) isn’t allowing them to do all in their power to solve the attack. When our heroes convince the prince to allow them more freedom to do their investigation then we move onto plot point 2. Plot point 2 is basically the obstacles traveled and faced in order for the investigation to take place and eventually lead to the capture of the villain.
The heroes basically consist of Ronald Fleury (the main character) and his team of FBI associates which include agents Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes. The hero’s allies include members of the Saudi Arabian police which were involved in the detention and investigation of the terrorist attack. Colonel Faris and Sergeant Haytham assisted and helped the heroes achieve their goal.
This investigation eventually leads the heroes and allies to the inmost cave of the enemy. This place in the movie is depicted as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Saudi Arabia where the most evil and powerful terrorist live and conspire. When they enter this place in search for their Nemesis Abu Hamza, they are fired upon and an all out war breaks upon them as they search for their kidnapped friend and fellow hero agent Leavitt in their final confrontation before reaching their goal. Once they rescue Leavitt, find and kill Abu Hamza and lose one of their allies (Faris), they return to their comfort zone in their ordinary world only to realize that they have achieved what they sent out to do; seek revenge.

    Character Arcs:
    • Fleury: after experiencing the investigation and losing him new friend and ally Faris, Fleury changed his revenge state of mind to becoming more interested in his family and general safety.
    • Leavitt: after being kidnapped by the terrorists, his relaxed and humorous nature became more oriented and serious regarding the dangers and threats of his job.
    • Mayes: after the shock of losing her friend and mentor in the terrorist attack, she focused on revenge and finding the culprits but after what they went through her focus became more on the reasons why we are and behave this way.
    • Saykes: he had the least character arc to overcome due to the fact that he was the most experienced and knew what to expect.
    • Faris: he doubted the Americans at first and was reluctant to help due to the command of his superiors and the cultural divided among them. As he became friends with the FBI agents the change in character and vision was clear in agent Faris and his sudden death had an impact on his friends and allies.
    • Haytham: after being tortured during an interrogation about the terrorist attack he seemed uncertain about believing in his government, but after the arrival of the FBI agents and a successful operations he seemed to become a better and person and a believer

  6. “The Kingdom”, starts off with a terrorist attack during a softball game at Saudi Arabia. Both Americans and Saudis were killed in the attack. After the attack Special Agent Ronald Fleury is called up by agent Francis Manner which is later killed by a second attack. This event is what makes agent Fleury, Agent Grant, Agent Garner, and Agent Bateman fly to Saudi Arabia to investigate who was the planner of this event.

When they first get to the scene, they are restricted from everything. They couldn’t touch anything or even move to certain areas. This makes Agent Fleury very angry at Al-Ghazi since he didn’t have any freedom to investigate the attack. Later on things changed, and the US agents had more liberty to examine every aspect of the attack. After many investigations, they found out from where was the attacked film. Agent Fleury tells Al-Ghazi to take him to a specific building. Fleury is told that the area where the building is located is very dangerous for him and his team, but Fleury insists in going there. When they reach there, they definitely see that the attack was film from the roof of the building.

Soon after they find this, they need to head back to US. On their way to King Khalid International Airport, Fleury notices a kid watching their crew from the other side of the street, and then sees that the last SUV of their crew has slowed down staying behind. Then he sees fast car coming towards them and grabs the wheel from Sergeant Haytham, which allows them to partially evade the collision that occurs when the speeding car runs into the first SUV of their crew, setting off a trunk full of explosives. The third SUV, crashes into the first SUV, killing all passengers. The fourth SUV finally drives up and the men inside pull out Leavitt, and take him as hostage. Fleury manages to hit one of attackers, and al-Ghazi takes a civilian vehicle to chase the fourth SUV and the other car into the dangerous Suweidi neighborhood of Riyadh. As they pull up, a gunman launches rocket at them and a firefight starts. With all this fighting occurring, Leavitt is tied up while his attackers prepare to film a tape of them executing him.

Fleury and his team manage to kill all the shooters and they get into the building where Leavitt is located. In the building they see a blood trail which leads them to the other shooters and they also kill them. While searching the building, Mayes enters a room where she sees a little girl. Mayes walks away and then finds Leavitt. Then she goes back to the girl to give her a lollipop and for her surprise, the little girl gives her a marble which is the final piece of the puzzle. The old man that was in the room was Abu Hamza, the leader of the terrorists. Al Ghazi kills him, but he is later killed in the same room.

He ends up blackmailing a powerful Arabian figure and he gives them a a way to get to Saudi Arabia. When he gets to Saudi Arabia, Fleury encounters his first enemy which would later become his allied Faris. The movie begins by explaining the origins of U.S. and Saudi diplomatic relations. it mentions the rising acquisitive power arabs gain with oil and how many uprising terrorist groups come to be. At first it tells us about the history since 1940’s through the persian gulf war, al Qaeda’s rising power and so forth. the movie actually begins when a group of terrorists of al Qaeda decide to bomb a softball game in an American oil company housing compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. special agent Mayes is killed in the attack which is the call to adventure of the movie to Fleury and his FBI team. Fleury doesn’t get permission to land in Arab soil but he blackmails the saudi ambassador to letting an investigative FBI team in the country. Once they are in Riyadh, they find out things weren’t as easy as Fleury though, his team is placed under a very strict control and their activity is severely monitored. Faris is in charge of monitoring every step this FBI team takes, but, Faris ideas seem to be far more similar to that of the American FBI team than to that of his Saudi mates. This allows little by little for Fleury to get more involved and into restricted areas which he could not before. Their investigation leads them to finding the group of terrorists responsible for the bombing. a huge confrontation begins in the streets of Riyadh while the team looks for one of the agents Leavitt who had been kidnapped by the same group of terrorists under Abu Hamza responsible for the bombing attacks. The FBI finally ends up with all the terrorists killed all the agents are fine but they loose Faris who had becomes very close to the team. They go back to the U.S. and go on with their lives in search of terrorists and hunting them down.

  11. Hero FBI agent Ronald Fluery

Ordinary World Ronald Fluery at his son’s elementary school, sharing the story of how the boy was born by c-section.

What is the crisis that unbalances his world? In Saudi Arabia several men attack and kill American citizens who were at a picnic.

What is the special world? Fleury, Mayes, Sykes and Leavitt are on their way to Saudi Arabia.

Who are his allies and antagonists? His allies are Mayes and Sykes.

His antagonists: Grandfather he is the long cycle of violence.

Who or what delivers his call to adventure? His friend, Francis Manning, calls him up to tell him about a terrorist attack, and is suddenly killed by a terrorist bomb. this prompts the FBI to send him out along with Mayes and Sykes.

Define the three acts according to the two main plot points. The first act is during the terrorist attack that kills Francis Manning and co. This acts as the Macguffin for the movie. Second act starts when the FBI team is deployed into Saudi Arabia, and ends when they kill the amateur fighters that were supposedly the real terrorists. Last act starts during the Convoy’s ambush, and ends with the Grandfather’s promises of vengeance.

When does the hero know what to do to win? He knows of the antagonists’ motivations and their methods, but he doesn’t know if he can stop them.

Does he? The ending shows that he didn’t achieve much; in fact, the circle of hate is repeating once again, so is it really a win, especially when his motivations were similar?

Describe the hero’s transformation (called the character arc). Fleury starts off as a controlled, professional soldier who cares deeply about his friends and family, even going so far as to personally deliver Manning’s son the news of his father’s death. At the end of the movie though, it is revealed that he is just like his enemies, having controlled Mayes by promising that they would kill them all, the exact thing that the evildoers promised.

This information gets to the Washington FBI headquarters and special agent Ronald Fleury takes charge of the situation. And gathers A team to head out to Saudi Arabia. Janet Mayes, Adam Leavitt, Grant Sykes are the other agents that are recruited by Fleury to head out to Arabia. Over there, Fleury and the other agents are greeted by Sergeant Haytham, Saudi Police, and Colonel Faris al-Ghazi. Quickly, agent Fleury and his teammates are closed up in a gymnasium that has been prepared for them to sleep in. Since the beginning, agent Fleury gets a bit skeptical about General Al Abdulmalik’s cooperation. Fleury and his male agents are invited to the Prince’s palace for dinner. Soon afterwards, Fleury and his team are notified by the U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Damon Schmidt (Jeremy Piven) that they have been ordered to return to the United States.

When Fleury and the other agents are taken to the airport, an attack is made to their convoy. Their SUV has a partial collision with an oncoming car. Abu Hamza’s daughter asks his own son, what did your grandfather tell you, he said, don’t worry were going to kill them all.

Special Agent Ronald Fleury- He goes from his comfort zone into Saudi Arabia. He goes from being a reasonable, analytical person to a rough acting person.

Special Agent Janet Mayes- She goes from being very sad because o the death of her loved one, to being very proud of fighting for him.

Special World: The special world that they enter is Saudi Arabia, where they are at first limited in every action they take upon there. They’re not allowed to leave the compound, touch evidence, or even be armed.
Plot 1: is when they started undergoing the evidence and start getting clearance to examine the building that the attack was filmed from and examining all the bodies and wreckage.
Plot 2: is when they’re finally pulled from the investigation and being sent home. on the way to the airport they get hit by the terrorist group of Abu Hamza where Leavitt is kidnapped. They proceed to rescue him with the little ammunition and back up they’ve got. They not only save Leavitt, but find and kill Abu Hamza in the process ending the rampage.

Mayes: She too was more tranquil and accepting of her comrade’s death after getting her revenge. This was Fleury’s promise and they got closure through it.

Faris: He always strived on honor to his country and protecting those in need. At the end he took down one of the greatest threats his country faced, Abu Hamza. He also went from being Racist and non accepting of Americans to having them as one of his True Comrades. He also went from being alive to dead.
Sykes: he was the veteran of the group and remained fairly emotionally stable throughout the movie. He went from to back up his comrades and was pleased in helping them achieve their mission and most of all revenge and closure for their friend.

One of their helpers is Coronel Saudi Al-Ghazi, who helps them with the case and with the many difficulties they face.
After many tries, they manage to discover some key aspects of the attack (like the fact that a terrorist brother had access to the ambulance where the second bomb was set and that he had access to police uniforms among other things).
The team received the order to go back to US but in their way to the airport they noticed that the terrorists were chasing them. Fleury and his team manage to follow one of the SUV into the dangerous neighborhood of Suweidi and go into a complex (The inmost cave).

They get into the complex looking for Leavitt. They ended up facing and old man which was their biggest nemesis Abu Hamza along with his grandson.
Their biggest helper (coronel Al-Ghazi) is killed and then they manage to kill the old man. Then they go back into their comfort zone which is United Stated

    2-) Character Arcs
Fleury: FBI agent that receives a call from his friend in Saudi Arabia telling him about the attack and after that he was killed by other bomb. This makes Fleury to build the team that goes to investigate the attack.
Team members: Leaviit, Mayes, Sykes, etc: each one of them had an especial skill that helped in the investigation.
Coronel Al-Ghazi who was the biggest helper of the team. He manage to go back into the investigation, helps them to find the terrorists and ends killed in the final confrontation.

Nemesis: the old man Abu Hamza and his teenage grandson.
Other nemeses are the ambassador, Authorities (prince), among others.

    Ordinary World:
Fleury is at home working with at their home-based FBI agency, and being at school with his child, talking about his career.

    Call to adventure:
He receives a call from one of his friends at the Middle East American facility that just got bombed by terrorist of Saudi Arabia, where his friend Francis Manner gets killed.

    Special World:
Fleury and his crew decide to go investigate the terrorist attack at the American facility in the Middle East. They are sleeping at a gym with 4 other agents.

    Plot Point 1:
The first plot started when they were trying to get to the American facility in Saudi Arabia, but they couldn’t because of the Consul, so he had to bribe them to get five dys of investigation. Also when they were trying to investigate but the Saudi Arabian Police had many rules that basically didn’t let them do anything.

    Plot Point 2:
The second plot point goes from the point they start really investigating the bombing area until they find Abu Hamza in the terrorist neighborhood.

    Inmost Cave:
When Leavitt gets taken, they follow the terrorist into a really bad neighborhood, basically where all terrorist had been waiting for them

    Thresholds:
The main threshold at the beginning was that Felury and his team was not able to go to the Facility at Saudi Arabia to investigate the bombing attack. The guardians were The FBI Chief and the Saudi Arabian Consul. Also the facility that got attack because they didn’t let them investigate properly another threshold guardian was the prince of Saudi Arabia.

    Shadow:
The shadow is Abu Hamza at the apartment, being surrounded by his family and his teenage son trying to kill the agents with a gun.

    Heroes Allies:
Grant Sykes, Janet Mayes, Adam Leavitt and Colonel Faris.

    Final Confrontation:
The final confrontation is when the terrorist takes Leavitt but Janet Mayes finally finds him and Fleury realizes that the old man sitting in the apartment is Abu Hamza one of the biggest terrorist of Saudi Arabia.

    2. Do complete character arcs for each of the heroes, with supporting evidence from the movie.

    Ronald Fleury:
The Heroes arc starts when his friend gets killed and then he meets Faris someone who has the same feelings as him even though he was from the Saudi Arabian Culture, he bonds with him but gets killed near the end.

    Janet Mayes:
She is the only girl on the crew, her best friend gets killed at the beginning (the person that use to take care and teach her.) She faces like 6 guys by herself and is the one that finds Leavitt. She has to overcome her sensitive side.

    Adam Leavitt:
He is the most pacifist from the whole group, but in the final confrontation he is the one being kidnap and beat by the terrorist, he gets save by Janet.

    Colonel Faris:
He start at the beginning as being very rigid with the Americans, but through out the movie he creates a bond with all of them specially Fleury that makes him change his perception about them and helping them with everything, he gets killed by one of his own.

Afterwards, one of Fleurys colleges, calls him to inform him about the recent attack, when suddenly he (Special Agent Francis Manner college) is killed when an ambulance filled with bombs explodes resulting in the death of many people around.

    – What is the special world?

Fleury’s special world is when he travels filled with rage and looking for remorse to “The kingdom” and starts his journey into finding the responsible for killing all these people, including his friend Francis.

Plot 1: The plot one consist on mostly the first parts of the movie where they found out about the attack and wish to come to where it all happened find the people who did it. However, there are many obstacles that they have to overcome, like the governments permission. The security protocol and attitude in “The Kingdom” and their regulations that prevent them from performing their job correctly. With time and good attitude they convince these people to trust them and finally go and make the investigations needed to reach the objectives.

Plot 2: Here is where the team is freely investigating every little detail they need to find these people. Levitt is abducted and this leads them into where the terrorist are hiding. – Threshold Guardians

The goverment people that are arguing with Fleury weather it is a good idea or not,, to go and perform this mission, and wether they are the right people to do so. When they arrive, it seems impossible for them to do their job when Faris is at the beginning a little hard to with with. He wouldn’t let them pretty much anything. They are prohibited to go into the roof where they think the attacked was planned King. After they have their permit, there’s a soldier that Fleury has to fight with before they go into the roof. The embassy agent Damon Schmidt which is constantly intruding in the teams work/ When they get to the neighbor where Levitt is abducted, they are comforted with several number of soldiers that they have to kill before they rescue Levitt.
    2. Do complete character arcs for each of the heroes, with supporting evidence from the movie
    1. The Kingdom
Ordinary World: The Ordinary World of our characters is different depending on our characters. The ordinary world of the American FBI agents is the headquarter in Washington just doing their job. In Faris and Haytham point of view, their ordinary world is in the Saudi State Police doing their job. The thing that forces them out of their special world is the terrorist attacks that kill the Americans friend and the Saudi people thus pushing them all into the special world.
Special World: The special world for Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes, and Sykes is Saudi Arabia where they are looking for the terrorist that killed their friends life. The special world for Faris and Haytham is taking care of the Americans that are looking for the terrorist and at the same time looking for the terrorist as well.
Plot Point 1: In plot point one we have the Americans Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes who are in Saudi Arabia to find the terrorist that killed their friend with a bomb to exact revenge and kill them. They all have their certain expertise in different areas which they bring into the group to find these terrorists.
Plot Point 2: In plot point 2 we have the Saudis Faris and Haytham who want to find the terrorist and kill them as well for what they have done and the attacks. They also have a personal vendetta because the terrorist got clothes from their department to use in the attacks making them look bad.
Heroes: The main heroes of the story are Fleury and Faris. They are both the main heroes of the story. If not for them then they would never have found the terrorists.
Allies: Faris and Haytham are the only allies of Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes. In the case of Faris and Haytham their allies are Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes. They help each other out to solve the case helping each other out with skills and knowledge they all have.
Thresholds: Going to Saudi Arabia, The Bomb Site, The Gymnasium and Saudi Arabia in general since they are locked out.
Thresholds Guardians: Faris, Haytham, Attorney General, Saudi Arabia Prime Minister, Saudi Prince Ahmed bin Khaled, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Damon Schmidt, and General Al Abdulmalik
Inmost Cave: dangerous Suweidi neighborhood of Riyadh
    Nemesis: Abu Hamza
Final Confrontation: In the final confrontation after they go into the Inmost Cave, Riyadh, to rescue Leavitt. Once in this neighborhood they start a gun fight with the terrorist killing them all and saving Leavitt. Right before they leave they go into a room to calm down a child who was crying. But when they go in they notice that this is in fact where Abu Hamza is hiding after they see an old man is missing a couple of fingers. A kid then kills Faris and Fleury kills the kid who is the grandson of the terroritst leader Abu Hamza. Then Haytham kills Abu Hamza when he pulls out a gun to kill them.
Return of the Hero: All the heroes return to their ordinary world except Faris who was killed in the final confrontation. They all go back but each gaining a bit in the process. Fleury gained new found respect for the Saudi Arabian people because of the way Faris acted with him. Leavitt came in touch with a life and death situation prompting him to become stronger. Haytham became a more central figure and found his relationship with Mayes normal. Mayes found that not all Saudi Arabian men will discriminate her because she was a women and was treated well by Haytham. Faris became more open in general and had a very friendly relationship at the end with the Americans. Sykes just came becak to the ordinary world with another story to tell.
    2.
    Character Arcs:
Fleury: Fleury started out very hateful of all Saudi because of his friends death and was very hard and cold. At the end of the movie he and Faris practically become best of friends and his death impacts Fleaury a lot. He gets very sad and even speaks to Faris son.
Leavitt: Leavitt started out as a very easy going person that joked about everything and didn’t care about anything. At the end of the movie he faced a very big life and death situation that made him a stronger person and just the whole ordeal changed him as a man.
Mayes:Mayes went into Saudi Arabia with a strong prejudice that she was going to be started at and treated like an animal. But at the end of the movie she gained a respectable and friendly relationship with Haytham.
Sykes: Didn’t have a big impact on him he just took everything that came and dealt with it. He was the most experienced of the group and knew what was coming but at the end he also felt more respect for the Saudis.
Faris: Faris just like Fleury started out cold and distant with the “Americans”. But at the end of the film Faris had a very good relationship with Fleury and they acted like brothers or at least very good friends. He respected the Americans and was more open about everything before his biggest change –His DEATH-.
Haytham: Haytham was a very correct officer who just followed orders and sweat a lot. At the end of the movie he respects more the Americans and ends with more experience about everything. Also because of his relationship with Mayes you might think that now he respects women more.

As a whole they all grow as characters.

In the movie “The Kingdom” the ordinary world of the heroes is working in the FBI in the United States, however when one of their friends and many Americans are killed in Middle East, they get out of their comfort zone and want to go to Saudi Arabia to find out who was in charge of these attacks. Before going to Saudi Arabia they have to get the permission of the attorney general. After meeting with them, they are denied the permission, but the manage a way the get there. They talk directly with one of the memebers of the royal family and get the permissions to get there, despite of the instructions they received before. When they get to Saudi Arabia they are not allowed to do almost anything, because the guard that was in charge of them, Faris, does not allow them to do much. They were only allowed to get out of the room when the guard goes, and they are not allowed to get any information, evidence or so. Before, it looked like Faris and Haytham, were part of the attack, but they fought with Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes, and Sykes like if it was their own cause. Later on, Faris, who at the beginning was not helping at all, decides to cooperate and becomes part of the heroes, he is willing to find out who was in charge of these assassinations and joins the other 4 heroes. This started on the second day of their arrival to Saudi Arabia, but he was absolutely convinced after their meeting with the prince. In one of the last scenes, which is the inmost cave, Faris is killed when combating against the ones in charge of the attacks and after rescuing Leavitt. After this, Fleury visits Faris son, and let’s him know that his father was a hero.

    – Fleury: Fleury is the main hero of the movie. At the beginning he is investigating things about Saudi Arabia, but I don’t think he is so passionate about it. However, when his friend is killed in the attack, he becomes super decided to combat the terrorist attacks and he wants to go personally to Saudi Arabia and find out who was the lider behind this. When he is in SA, he is first very apprehensive when it comes to Faris and Haytham, he didn’t trust them very much. Later on, when they start to collaborate, he becomes more fond of them. At the end, he still wanted revenge for the death of his friend, but his perception of Faris had changed completely.

    – Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes: They are also part of the FBI in Washington, and their motive to get out of their comfort zone is also Fleury’s reason, which is when their friend is Killed. Since they told everyone about the attack, Leavitt was willing to go to Saudi Arabia from the very beginning, in fact he was the first one to propose it, nontheless he didn’t know only them four were the ones that were going to go, and he didn’t feel very prepared for it. Almost at the end of the movie he is kidnapped by the enemy side, and there he has to fight for his own life. Mayes was very hurt when she kne about her friend, eventhough she did want revenge for what happened, because she was a women, she was more sentimental about the things that surrounded them, this was shown in several scenes, for example when she walks into the house where there is a small girl and her family and also in the scene where Faris is killed by Abu Hamza’s teenage grand child, she doesn’t shoot because of this, and Faris is killed. Sykes was also like Mayes, and they took the cause even more personal when Leavitt was kidnapped, because they were not going to loos somebody else.

-Faris: Faris is the guard assigned to keep safe the four americans arriving to Saudi Arabia. At the begining of the movie he showed himself a little suspicious, personally I thought he was involved in the bombing, specially because of the dialogue he has with Haytham about defending his country. Also, when Fleury, Leavitt, Mayes and Sykes arrive, he is a little skeptical about what they were really doing in his country and he didn’t want to help them at all. Later on, he became more helpfull and was more involved with the case mostly, in my opinion, after they went to the witness house and he sees their suffering, also after he goes home and spends time with his family. After this, he gets fully involved with the case, he tells them everything they know, and risked his own life in search for Abu Hamza.

The ordinary world is a world in which United States and Saudi Arabia relationships are somewhat put into doubts, because of previous terrorist events that had happened.

A shooting and bombing occurs at an American housing compound in Saudi Arabia, when an FBI agent at the site calls his colleague Fleury in the US to inform him about the attack. Fleury later losses contact with the Agent and this is the crisis that took the hero and his allies out of their comfort zone and ordinary world.

FBI agent Ronald Fleury and his team composed by Sykes, Mayes and Leavitt decide to go to Saudi Arabia to investigate about the terrorist attack. They travel to the unknown and are introduced to Colonel Faris, the one in charged of the police at the compound that was attacked, he can be identified as a threshold guardian since he limits the FBI agents ability to investigate. They are not allowed to touch anything during the investigation and are very limited in these new grounds. After Fleury spoke with the Prince which was the major threshold because of him they were basically controlled, they were allowed to investigate thoroughly, they had found out that someone involved in the terrorist attack had access to the police’s equipment. Led by the investigation they ended up in a house killing a bunch of teenagers, yet they were not satisfied because they didn’t believe they were the one heavily involved in the terrorist attacks.

A US agent, since the beginning has forced them to leave Saudi Arabia, he’s another threshold guardian. Eventually after the killing of the terrorist youngsters he forces them to leave the country, and on their way to the airport they are tricked and are intercepted by a bomber and other terrorists. They end up taking one of their colleagues (Leavitt) but later they are able to track the ones that kidnapped him, the inmost cave is where he is taken which is where the final confrontation happens.

In this final stage they manage to find Leavitt and free him from the terrorist.

During the final confrontation Abu Hamza a terrorist leader, nemesis, and shadow of them all is drawn into the scene. They end up killing Abu Hambza, and Colonel Faris is shot to death by his grandson.

They have finally ended their mission in Saudi Arabia, Fleury visits Faris’s home and told his son how brave he was. The hero is back to his comfort zone.

    2.

Fleury: Acknowledging the news of his fallen colleague and incident, he took a very proactive attitude and immediately sought into looking for a way to investigate the crime scene. Once he landed in Saudi Arabia he was suppressed and limited by local authorities, he felt powerless. As he saw that this situation didn’t change he somewhat regained power when he spoke to the prince and was pleased with what he wanted. He remained strong throughout the movie, and at the end was once again hit by the lost of his friend Faris.

Myes: Once she knew about what happened to Manners, she was totally devastated, never the less she went to Saudi Arabia for the revenge of his teammate. She decided to remain tough throughout the mission, but at the end she was found in a scene where she felt sorry about a little girl that caught her off guard.

Faris: The attitude he took since the very beginning of the attack was basically protecting his integrity and those that collaborated within his police force. When he received the FBI agents he had a very bossy attitude towards all of them because of the order that he was given, later on he was ordered by the prince to play easier on the FBI agents. He later became great friends with the agents, especially with Fleury, as they began gaining confidence in each other. Faris at the end always remained supportive towards them and brave against the situation until his final decease.

Leavitt, Sykes: They are basically supporting the investigation with a positive but cautious attitude toward the occurrences, they show confidence in their field of study, once they are granted access to the bombing site. Leavitt is kidnapped but he demonstrate strength when he fights the terrorist until he is saved by Myes. Their character arc take a similar path in comparison to Fleury.

Devastated – Vengeance -Security- Powerless – Empowered

  21. Ordinary world: Ronald Fleury is a special agent at the FBI headquarters in Washington DC.
What crisis unbalances the world? In Saudi Arabia several men attack and kill American and Arabian citizens in a bombing.
Special world: comes after the call to adventure, which is the news of the bombing and then the death of his colleague special agent Manner in the bombing. This makes the FBI send him along with Sykes and Mayes
Who are his allies? His allies are Mayes and Sykes.
The first act is during the terrorist attack that kills Manning and the rest of people in the bombing. Second act starts when the FBI team is deployed into Saudi Arabia, and ends when they kill newbie terrorists that were suppose to be the real terrorists. The last act starts during the Convoy’s ambush, and ends with the Grandfather’s (Abu Hamza) promises of vengeance.
In what point does the hero know what to do to win? He knows of the Abu Hamza’s motivations and their methods, but he doesn’t know if he can stop them.
Does he? In my opinion he did achieve what he was after which was vengeance but he didn’t actually achieve anything because the ending shows a never ending cycle of vengeance
    Describe the hero’s transformation
Fleury starts off as a specialized soldier who cares a lot for his friends and family; this is shown when he delivers Manning’s son the news of his father’s death. At the end of the movie it is revealed that he is just like their enemies because he promised Mayes the same thing as the grandfather promised, that they will kill “them” all.

What is the crisis that unbalances their world? A bombing that took place during a baseball game on an American oil company housing, where many Americans and Saudis died.

What is the special world? Arrives when the U.S. government agents are sent to investigate the bombing in the Middle East, specifically in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Who are his allies and antagonists? They really become a team on their own, but the Saudi Prince Ahmed bin Khaled, can be consider an ally because he gave then the permission to have the freedom they needed to get to finally get to the bottom and get the bad guys.

Antagonists are Al Qaeda terrorist and Jeremy Piven because he didn’t believe in them.
Who or what delivers his call to adventure? Their call to adventure is delivered by Grabt Sykes when he informs them the situation, in case of the U.S. government agents. The Saudi’s where there when the event took place.

1st Plot point: The bombing in American oil company housing.

2nd Plot point: The teams of U.S. government agents, and the Saudi’s Police members work together to find the ones responsible.

3rd Plot point: Leavitt is kidnapped and the others go after him, finding the ones responsible, and killing everyone.
When does the hero know what to do to win? When they all arrive to where Leavitt is being taken.
Does he? They win, but Faris dies.

Describe the hero’s transformation (called the character arc).

Ronald Fleury, Grabt Sykes, Janet Mayes, Adam Leavitt, Colonel Faris Al Ghazi, and Sergeant Haytham: they all didn’t understand the Saudi’s culture and police members at first, but towards the end they understood they were all after the same goal, they all had families and something to fight for, they were all in pain and angry, they all wanted revenge.

  23. Ronald Fleury is at the FBI Headquarters in Washington (ordinary world). At the beginning, the movie explains the origins of United States and Saudi Arabia relations and how has transformed the Middle East. It shows the conflicts that have risen years ago for the ownership of the oil industry. The action starts in an American compound in Saudi Arabia, when terrorists attack the compound, setting off bombs and killing hundreds of people. After the attack, Special Agent Francis Manner calls up his colleague Special Agent Ronald Fleury to tell him about the attack. Then, a second bomb explodes in the compound killing Agent Manner and more people (call to adventure). As a consequence of Manner’s death, Fleury travels with agent Grant Sykes, Janet Mayes and Adam Leavitt (allies) to Saudi Arabia, to try to find the responsible for the attack (special world).

They met Colonel Faris al-Ghazi (Ashraf Barhom), who is the commander in Saudi Arabia, but Fleury realized that Colonel al-Ghazi (threshold guardian) is not in charge of running the investigation, General Al Abdulmalik (threshold guardian), was the person in charge, however, he does not give Fleury and his team permission to investigate. While at the palace, Fleury persuaded the Prince (threshold guardian) that Colonel al-Ghazi is a great detective and should be allowed to lead the investigation. This action was a strategic one, because he did that to hands-on approach to the crime scene.

Then, Fleury is attacked by terrorists. He then notices a speeding car coming towards them and grabs the wheel from Sergeant Haytham, which allows them to partially evade what occurs when the speeding car runs, setting off a trunk full of explosives. Leavitt is tied up while the attackers prepare to film a tape of them executing him. After having killed the attackers, al-Ghazi decides that three of them have to go and find Leavitt and two must stay behind and cover the entrance. While Sykes and Haytham watch the entrance, al-Ghazi, Fleury and Mayes enter the building (threshold), following a blood trail. (Final confrontation). Then, Fleury realized that there is a trail of blood leading to the back of the apartment, and al-Ghazi sees the grandfather, suspects something and asks to help him up in order to inspect his hand. When the old man gives him his hand, the man is missing fingers. So, they confirm their ideas that the grandfather is the terrorist leader.
Abu Hamza’s teenage grandson (nemesis) managed to shoot al-Ghazi. After, Abu Hamza feebly pulls out an assault rifle and Haytham puts three shots. Al-Ghazi dies in Fleury’s arms. Fleury and his team return to the U.S., where they are commended by FBI Director James Grace for their remarkable work (return to the ordinary world).

    1. Ordinary World: At the beginning of the movie the growing conflict and difficult relationship United States have with Saudi Arabia is displayed. It shows the issues around the control of the oil industry, but moreover it shows the failed attempts Saudi Arabia have had to control the extreme terrorists of their country.
    2. Special World: An American housing compound in Saudi Arabia explodes, as a bomb was set off by terrorists, American civilians and Saudi Police die. A second bomb is set off that kills Special Agent Manner, who warned Special Agent Fleury of the previous attack. Fleury heads to Saudi Arabia with a team, to find who is behind the attacks, in the Kingdom they struggle, and are in constant combat to find answers and the man responsible for the chaos.
    3. Plot Point 1: Fleury’s team is denied to perform the investigation, because Saudi officials are prohibiting them.
    4. Plot Point 2: Fleury’s team while heading back to the airport find themselves in an ambush, which inspires them to continue with the investigation.
    5. Heroes: Ronald Fleury, Grant Sykes, Janet Mayes and Adam Leavitt
    6. Allies: Colonel Faris Al Ghazi, Sargeant Haytham, Prince Ahmed bin Khaled.
    7. Thresholds: Prohibition to perform investigation, when they can enter the bombsite and also the time when they can enter the Suweidi neighborhood.
    8. Threshold Guardians: Prince Ahmed bin Khaled, Colonel Faris al-Ghazi, Saudi Ambasssador, General Al Abdulmalik.
    9. Inmost Cave: Suweidi neighborhood.
    10. Shadow: Abu Hamza
    11. Final Confrontation: There is major combat as the team enters a neighborhood, they somehow manage to find Leavitt who was kidnapped and it ends with Abu Hamza and his grandson being killed.
    12. Return of the Hero: They all go home, marked but what occurred in their journey through the Kingdom.

    Character Arcs:

    • Fleury: he first was a cold Special Agent focused on his work who at the end of the movie becomes attached to his team.
    • Mayes: She has to face the gender issues in Saudi Arabia, but after the mission she becomes a recognized figure in the country.
    • Haytham: He gets to have a better relationship with the Americans, and also gets close to Janet Mayes.
    • Leavitt: After facing death at the end of the movie, he changes his ways and replaces his relax way of being and becomes a more mature person.
    • Faris: At the end of the movie he dies, but at least he changed his perception towards Americans, and made good friends with Fleury.
    • Sykes: He was the veteran of the group, he had seen enough, to suffer changes after their visit to The Kingdom, even though he gained respect from the Saudi population.

The terrorists enter the compound with uniforms of the Saudi State Police. While two hijack a vehicle and shoot the residents of the area, a suicide bomber dressed a policeman enters the softball field, killing everyone near him. When the team finds out that Special agent Francis Manner was killed in the attack they immediately want to go to Saudi and find those responsible for the attack. After a struggle with American Bureaucracy they get permission to go but with many limitation by both the Saudi and American government. They are basically not given permission to investigate only to observe since they where not even allowed to go near the bombsite (THRESHOLD). FBI team is invited to the palace of Saudi Prince Ahmed bin Khaled where Fleury convinces the prince that Colonel Al-Ghazi should lead the investigation. With Al-Ghazi as Leader the team is given the chance to investigate on their own. Here they find what was used to detonate the bomb and notice from where the video was taken (THRESHOLD). When they finally get there will the help of Al-Ghazi they are halted by General Al Abdulmalik who was formerly running the investigation. Later the make the connection with the ambulance and the uniforms to the brother of a dead terrorist they order a raid and kill a couple of them Fleury notices they are amateurs hence they where not the ones responsible for the attack. Soon afterwards, Fleury and his team are notified by the U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Damon Schmidt that they have been ordered to return to the United States despite the case not being solved. On their way to the airport the convoy is intercepted and Levitt is taken. The team immediately follows Levitt’s kidnappers and save him. A short while after the team enters a family’s living quarters after the fight and Mayes sees a scared little girl and gives her a lollipop and what the girl gives her in return is a marble just like the ones used in the bombings.Thats when they realize that they at abu hamzas house and al gahzi gets shot and killed.this is the final confrontation.
